Shape the Future. Lead with Purpose. Govern for Impact.

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in becoming a Lay Member of Council at the University of Nottingham.

Nottingham is a university with extraordinary talent, global reach and deep civic responsibility. We are proud of our world-class research, our transformative educational experience and the impact we make on individuals, communities and society. As one university across campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, we operate within a genuinely international community united by a shared sense of purpose.

Like many universities, Nottingham is navigating a period of significant change. The higher education sector continues to evolve rapidly, bringing both challenges and opportunities, and our focus remains firmly on ensuring the University is well positioned to thrive for generations to come.

This is also a significant moment for our governance. In October, we will welcome a new Chair of Council who will work alongside Council members, our Vice-Chancellor and the wider University community to help guide Nottingham through the next phase of its development. As we look ahead, we are keen to strengthen our governing body with individuals who can bring fresh perspectives, independent judgement and a shared commitment to our mission and values.

Council plays a vital role in the stewardship of the University. As the governing body, it provides strategic oversight, ensures robust governance and accountability, and supports the long-term sustainability and success of the institution. Council members are entrusted with helping shape major decisions, offering constructive support and challenge, and acting as ambassadors for the University across their sectors and communities.

We are seeking individuals from a broad range of professional backgrounds who can bring board-level experience, sound judgement and a collaborative approach to governance. Whether your experience has been gained in the public, private or third sector, your contribution can help ensure that Nottingham continues to deliver excellence in education, research and societal impact.

Most importantly, we are looking for people who believe in the power of higher education to transform lives and who are committed to supporting a university that is ambitious, inclusive and globally connected.

For the right individuals, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the world’s leading universities at a particularly important point in its journey. As we welcome a new Chair and look towards the future, Council members will play an important role in helping shape Nottingham’s next chapter and ensuring it continues to make a positive impact for students, staff, communities and society.

Thank you again for your interest, and I warmly encourage you to explore this opportunity further.
